Master's Exam

The culmination of the M.S. degree program is the Master's Exam. In order to complete the M.S. degree requirements, students must take a written exam involving the analysis of two applied problems, plus an oral defense of the solutions. This is usually done during the second year, and is administered by the Statistics Department Master's Exam Committee. The examination may be repeated once. The MS exam requires students to analyze two "real" data sets, write a report and defend their analysis before the MS Exam Committee. The analysis portion usually covers a one week time period. The oral exam lasts approximately a half hour.
