Biostatistics and Statistics Student Award Winners

 

2013 Student Award Winners

  • BMI student Jeremy Weiss (advisor, David Page) won a best plenary presentation award at the National Library of Medicine 2013 Informatics Training Conference for his talk entitled "Multiplicative-Forest Continuous-Time Disease Prediction from EHRs".
 

2012 Student Award Winners

  • Ning Leng, PhD student advised by Christina Kendziorsi, was selected as one of ten students to represent UW-Madison in the HHMI competition.

  • Yunzhi Lin, PhD student advised by Professor Rick Chappell, has won the 2012 American Statistical Association's Statistical Computing and Graphics Section student travel award. Yunzhi will present her material on selecting cancer staging systems at the Joint Statistical Meetings this summer in San Diego, with registration and travel paid for by the ASA.

  • Yunzhi Lin, PhD student advised by Professor Rick Chappell, has an International Society for Clinical Biostatistics award in 2012 for her paper tilted "Advanced Colorectal Neoplasia Risk Stratification by Penalized Logistic Regression".

2010 Student Award Winners

  • Peihua Qiu (Brian Yandell, advisor) was named Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics (IMS) at an induction ceremony on August 10, 2010, at the IMS Annual Meeting in Gothenburg, Sweden.

  • Seungbong Han, Ph.D. student, for being the recipient of a student travel award to attend the 2010 International Society Clinical Biostatistics meeting in Montpellier, France. His manuscript entitled "Semiparametric modeling of doubly censored data with an application to prostate cancer", is co-authored with his co-advisors, Adin-Cristian Andrei and Kam-Wah Tsui.

  • Seungbong Han, Ph.D. student, for being the recipient of one of the three 2010 "Sylvan B. Green" student paper awards from the Society for Clinical Trials. His manuscript entitled "A novel semiparametric method for modeling interval-censored data", is co-authored with his co-advisors, Adin-Cristian Andrei and Kam-Wah Tsui.

2008 Student Award Winners

  • Ben Haaland won a student travel award for the 2008 Spring Research Conference on Statistics in Industry and Technology.

  • Kevin Eng (advisors Sunduz Keles and Grace Wahba) won an ENAR 2008 Student Travel Award for his paper entitled "A Linear mixed model for multi-species time course gene expression data".

  • Bo Huang (advisor, Rick Chappell): won a 2008 ENAR student travel award for his paper "Three-dose cohort designs in cancer phase I trials".

2007 Student Award Winners

  • Pei-Fen Kuan and Hyonho Chun (advisor Sunduz Keles), second prize winners for their poster "CMARRT: A tool for the analysis of ChIP-chip data from tiling arrays by incorporating the correlation structure" at the first  Midwest Symposium of Computational Biology and Bioinformatics (MSCBB), October 6, 2007 Evanston, IL.

2006 Student Award Winners

  • Team of Hyonho Chun and S. H. Cho First Prize winners in the DataExpo 2006 Competition at JSM 2006.

  • Meng Chen (Christina Kendziorski, advisor) won a 2006 ENAR student travel award for her paper "Interval Mapping for Expression Quantitative Trait Loci".

  • Rui Song (Michael Kosorok, advisor) won a 2006 ENAR student travel award for her paper "A Sample Size Formula for Recurrent Events Data Using Robust Log-rank Statistics".

  • Xiaodan Wei (Rick Chappell, advisor) won a 2006 ENAR student travel award for her paper "A Test for Non-inferiority with a Mixed Multiplicative/Additive Null Hypothesis".

  • Fan Lu (Grace Wahba, advisor) is a winner of the the ASA Section on Statistical Computing 2006 Student Paper Competition, for his paper "Kernel Reglarization and Dimension Reduction".

  • Xiaodan Wei (advisor Rick Chappell), Society for Clinical Trials Student Scholarship Award, and winner of "Thomas Chalmers" award for best paper.

2004 Student Award Winners

  • John Carew (advisors Grace Wahba and Beth Meyerand): Student travel award to present Carew, Dalal, Wahba, and Fain, "Estimating Arterial Wall Shear Stress" at ISMRM12, Kyoto, Japan, 2004.

  • Deepayan Sarkar (Advisor Douglas Bates) ASA Chambers Award, 2004: This award is made possible by a donation from Dr. John M. Chambers. The award is given to students with outstanding contributions to statistical software.

  • Ming Yuan (Advisors Grace Wahba and Yi Lin, paper co-written by Christina Kendziorski) has won the ENAR John Van Ryzin Student Paper Award, 2004: "Hidden Markov Models for Microarray Time Course Data in Multiple Biological Conditions".

  • Stephen Stanhope (Michael Newton-Advisor): paper entitled "Evolution Strategies for Multivariate-to-Anything Partially Specified Random Vector Generation" has been accepted for presentation at the 2004 IEEE Congress on Evolutionary Computation and for publication in the conference proceedings published annually by IEEE. 2003 Student Award Winners

  • Yoonkyung Lee (Supervisor Grace Wahba): Best Student Poster award at the 2003 Annual Meeting of the American Meteorological Society, Satellite Meteorology and Oceanography Session for the paper "Classification of Satellite Radiance Data by Multicategory Support Vector Machines". Paper authored by Yoonkyung Lee, Grace Wahba and Steven A. Ackerman.

  • Yuan Ji (Supervisor KyungMann Kim): Charles Sampson Poster Award at the 25th annual Midwest Biopharmaceutical Statistics Workshop, 2002.

  • David Todem (Advisor KyungMann Kim): NSF Award to participate in the conference on "Designs for generalized linear models", organized by the National Institute of Standards and Technology in Githersburg, MD, 2002.

  • David Todem (Advisor KyungMann Kim): Student Paper Travel Award from the NSF and Case Western Reserve.
